How GetDot works with BigQuery

How Dot connects and what it reads

A service account key, with an optional execution project that runs and pays for the queries. List the datasets to sync, or leave the list empty for all of them.

Dot reads table and column metadata and recent INFORMATION_SCHEMA.JOBS history, to learn which tables your team uses most.

Every job carries labels naming the Dot user, the chat and what triggered it (a question, a schedule, a dashboard), which show up in your billing export.

Permissions and row-level security

The service account needs read access to the chosen datasets and the right to run query jobs in the execution project. Dot queries BigQuery in place; nothing is copied.

With per-user BigQuery access, each person’s questions run as their own Google account through domain-wide delegation, so BigQuery’s IAM and row access policies decide what they see. If Google refuses someone, the question fails; Dot never falls back to the service account.

Without it, Dot’s row-level rules (Team plan) filter each query by the asker’s groups or attributes.

Dot and Conversational Analytics in BigQuery

As of October 2026, Google’s Conversational Analytics in BigQuery is generally available (since July 2026). It is built into BigQuery Studio, inherits BigQuery’s access controls, and publishes agents to Gemini Enterprise, Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) or your own app through its API. Google’s announcement does not mention Slack or Teams.

Choose it when your people already live in BigQuery Studio and BigQuery holds every answer. Choose Dot when the questions turn up in Slack, Teams or email, when the definitions live in Looker, dbt or Power BI, or when some of the data never made it into BigQuery.
